Melissa officinalis is derived from a Greek word that means bee.

It is an aromatic and herbaceous plant. This plant belongs to Lamiales and Lamiaceae family.

Harvesting of this plant is usually done at the end of May, before the flowers appear. After harvesting, the leaves and branches are placed in the air to dry quickly and then stored in a dark and dry place.

This plant is native to Mediterranean regions and is also distributed in Europe and Asia. In Iran, it grows along the waterways and areas around Tehran, in the north of Iran in Rasht and its surroundings, Rudbar, and in Azerbaijan and the eastern regions of Iran and the western provinces.
